Miami is experiencing a rebirth. For some time now, we have seen how this popular destination is reinventing itself, leaving behind the look and feel that made it the place to be in the ’90s. Places like the Wynwood Arts District have attracted new travelers in search of renewed emotions, so it is not surprising that several historic sites are getting also a deserved facelift.

That is the case of Shelborne South Beach, originally opened in 1940 and designed by Art Deco architect, Igor Polevitsky. Time after its opening the hotel was renovated by Morris Lapidus, who embedded his neo-Baroque style and accentuated the glamour that made the Shelborne an iconic destination. Sixty years after that the Galbut family, the current owners, have set up a goal: to revive the original grandeur of the Shelborne.

Retaining the original architecture of the property has been a priority and they have worked closely with the Historic Preservation Commission of the City of Miami Beach. A couple of designers have joined this mission: Meg Sharpe, whose talent is to retain the original architectural of her projects but at the same time incorporate sophistication and contemporary comfort; and Richard Mishaan whom using a color palette inspired by the iconic beaches of South Beach has permeated his personal style on the hotel’s 200 rooms.

The new Shelborne, located in the heart of the Art Deco district, reflects true glamour and elegance of yesteryear but incorporates technology and modernity of today. The heart of the hotel vibrates outdoors; we can imagine the lavish parties that were held in the ’50s in the elegant pool area, which now boasts minimalist cabanas full of amenities and a vintage springboard that serves as a fountain during the hot days. The best of two eras in one place.
