Known as one of Mexico’s most popular fresh faces, Sergio Mayer Mori is a promising voice in the making. The young actor, who little by little has established a career in the industry, is starting a new chapter: music. Dapper Tapper sits down with him to talk about life, upcoming project and what love means in his life.

You’ve probably been asked this a million times. I would like to start from the beginning. What did Sergio dream of as a child? What inspired you the most or filled you with hope?
I genuinely feel that music has always been my greatest pleasure and inspiration. Since I can remember I wanted to listen and make music.
What’s the greatest lesson that life has brought into your life?
That love is above all things. And that compassion and respect for life are imperative for a beautiful and fulfilling life. More than anything when it seems to be darker.

Why would you say music is essential in every human’s life?
I know that music is essential for the majority of human beings because of what I mentioned previously… it is an exquisite art. With which the emotional connection is almost automatic, turning it a very accessible and stimulating experience.
Tell us about this new musical project. You do it for yourself and for the people you are looking to connect with. How did it start? How would you define it? At the end of the day it is something unique because it is yours.
“We One” could be defined as my first attempt to make music from a new perspective, which allows me to have a complete and exquisite clarity of what I want to say and express that through my lyrics and my sound.
It’s very special to me just for that. I feel that I am taking the first step in music with a certainty of what I want to do – which I feel is achieved through many years of trying and failing to find your own sound. For that I feel very grateful and I love this project.
During the process and production of this material, was there something about yourself that you had to work on? Or something you discovered about yourself?
Definitely. It was a process of a couple of years that took me to finish the album. Of the 13 tracks that made the edit, we had 40. Obviously, with time, everything changes: your ideals, your taste, perspectives… Of course there were moments of change in me in the creative process. But the beautiful thing is that it is reflected on the record. Just as there are songs that talk about being okay, there are others that talk about being sad. And I think they complement each other beautifully.
What inspires your music? What are your favorite sounds?
I have had so many stages and musical tastes that it would be very difficult to be specific with one of them. But John Mayer was one of the first artists I admired. Nowadays I could tell you that musicians like Tom Misch or Nai Palm make me want to take my music to higher levels. But I have had many influences from the Oscar Peterson Trio to Hiatus Kaiyote, from Parliament to Flavien Berger, or from the Buttering trio to Camille Saint-Saëns.

When can we listen to the new material and where? Could you tell us what your favorite song is and why?
On October 7th the first single, “Acalanto,” came out. “Fuck This” will be out in November. And I will continue to release the 4 singles month after month and then the rest of the tracks will come out. The music is on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, among others. There is also content on Youtube.
It’s hard to choose my favorite song. It’s like choosing your favorite kid among 13, but I obviously like some better than others.
We are always evolving. Who is Sergio? What does Sergio want for his life?
What I want most for my life is love. I hope that for the rest of my time here, the perspective with which I see and fall in love with life today is always present.
