A conversation… Cody Simpson x Versace
It is easy to know why Versace selected Australian golden boy Cody Simpson as the image of their new eyewear campaign.
Before making it big as a singer and actor, Cody was a competitive swimmer in Queensland. He even won two gold medals at the 2009 Queensland Swimming Championships. Cody sums up the Versace man: bold, talented, and unafraid to step out of his comfort zone. The campaign images feature Cody Simpson modeling contemporary eyeglass and sunglass styles as he conveys confidence and a recognizable Versace attitude.
We spoke with Cody and learned that he has always been a fan of the brand. “When I was contacted by Versace, I was thrilled, I have always admired Donatella and Versace’s iconic style,” he said. “My perception is that Versace is a brand that breaks the rules, is daring, and always one step ahead. I have also always loved the connection it has to the world of music, my passion.”
This collection reinvents the iconic Medusa, now designed as a hollow, cast piece that is pleasant to the touch that highlights the contemporary openwork frames of the glasses. “Versace is one of the few brands that is always capable of creating a statement even with its glasses. I think of the Biggies that were created for the Notorious B.I.G. If that’s not right, I don’t know what is.” Cody added.
Some of the campaign pictures show Cody in a bathtub, and although it is not exactly a swimming pool, he still felt that it represented his personality and style. “When the team explained the concept of the Versace Eyewear campaign to me, I knew it was going to work perfectly. I am a competitive swimmer and had been in intense training before traveling to Milan. The images were taken in my element: water. I felt comfortable and at ease during the session, and the photos reflect it.”
“Donatella Versace is behind the creation of some of the most iconic images in the history of fashion and photography. It is a great honor for me to have become part of the Versace iconography.”
Talking about the collection and how it combines with his personal style Cody said that his favorite piece is the new Pilot style. “It is beautiful; it is both modern and timeless. I also like the Gold Mask. Super cool.”
“What I love about Versace is that it doesn’t forgive anyone. Like it or not, you cannot remain indifferent to them. This is something that, as far as I’m concerned, also represents my lifestyle. I do what I want to do, I follow my instincts.”
